GEORGETTE
Georgette listened to the soft snores coming from the chair in the darkest corner of the room. She couldnât sleep.
Not while she wrestled so savagely with her thoughts.
She had been in the Princeâs cabin, this close to going home.
She touched her lips, remembering the Princeâs chaste kiss. She was not sure what she was more worried about, the Prince finding out she was now married to a pirate, or Captain Stone discovering the Prince had kissed his wife.
His bellowed words echoed in her mind from the day he rescued her.
Touch my wife and I will destroy you all.
She shuddered. Going with him was the right thing to do. Prince Edward would be dead otherwise. Captain Stone would not have wasted a moment of hesitation. She had seen him kill before.
Now she was in a foreign land with her enemy, with no hope of rescue. Running away already proved futileâshe had no experience in the real world. She would surely end up in danger again.
Captain Stoneâs promise came back to her then.
I will burn this entire world down to keep you safe.
The man was a cold, ruthless criminal, but for some unknown reason, he was committed to keeping her safe.
She sighed and tried to sort through her confusion.
There was the fact that he had never forced her to be carnal with him, even though he had forced her into marriage and was entitled consummation by rights. Even when he told her to show him her nakedness and washed her down, he did so with surprising tenderness.
The heat of his hand lit up a fire in her that day. It continued to simmer, even now, as she lay in the tiny inn bed.
He had vowed that he would not do anything to her until she got down on her knees and begged for it, and so far, he had kept his word.
She rolled over with a huff and frowned at the wall. She may have had a slight curiosity as to what the man could do to her, and how that might feel⦠But she was far from begging to find out.
She decided to list all the reasons to hate the man. They included every dastardly act he had done, starting with when he stormed the castle and captured her.
Slaughtering all those pirates like pigs. Sending his own crew to oblivionâ¦
Another voice suddenly intruded on Georgetteâs reverie.
He did those things to keep you safe, didnât he? The pirates were going to do terrible things to you, and his crew was going to do the same.
She bit her lip and buried her face in the musty smelling feather pillow, trying to douse the insensible flames of desire rising within.
She could not possess feelings for her captor. What kind of life would that be?
In any case, staying with him was her best shot at surviving in this world. While she figured out a way to return to her Prince without getting him killed, she needed Captain Stone.
Her core throbbed at the thought.
